Carroll Consulting’s story is one of heritage, evolution, and a steadfast commitment to people and culture.

Our roots trace back to 1990, when Mike Carroll, after a distinguished career pioneering IT placements in the Queensland Government, established Carroll Consulting Group. Driven by family needs and a passion for the industry, he laid the foundation for a business built on integrity, respect, and deep client relationships.

In 1992, Ian Hamilton joined Carroll Consulting as a permanent recruitment consultant. His career journey began as an apprentice motorcycle mechanic, working alongside two colleagues who were fresh from the world’s Grand Prix circuits – an environment that sharpened his competitive streak and honed his problem-solving instincts.

After gaining a qualification in marketing, Ian transitioned into publishing before discovering recruitment – his third career – where his technical grounding, practical mindset, and client-focused approach found their natural home. This blend of experience gives Ian a unique appreciation for the people and industries Carroll Consulting serves.

Ian’s move to Brisbane was shaped by both family and opportunity. His wife, a Queenslander, wanted to return home, and the move offered the chance for a new chapter – personally and professionally. This transition led Ian to a business that deeply resonated with his values, particularly the belief in treating people with dignity and respect.

The early 90s were challenging, with the tail end of a recession and a tough recruitment market, but Carroll Consulting’s focus on people set the firm apart. By the late 90s, Ian acquired the business, driven by a desire to shape his own destiny. Through industry changes and economic cycles, the firm grew, always anchored by a belief in strategic recruitment and culture fit – long before these became industry buzzwords.

Growth Through Collaboration

In the 2000s, Carroll Consulting was entering the early phase of what would become known as strategic recruitment.

Key partners helped shape this evolution over the years. Michael Scott, who joined in the early 2000s, brought fresh perspectives and modernised processes.

Margie, another partner, strengthened Ian’s collaborative approach to leadership – a reminder that there are many paths to success when teams share common goals. She later pursued a career in psychology, focusing on supporting executives experiencing burnout.

In 2014, Andrew Hill joined the team, bringing a pragmatic, process-driven approach that complements Ian’s vision. Together, they lead client relationships, blending stability with strategic insight. Andrew’s thoughtful style ensures focus on long-term objectives, while Ian’s experience and vision drives the business forward.

Andrew Hill: Pragmatic Insight


Every chapter in our story has brought new perspectives. Andrew Hill, introduced to the team in 2014, has become a key driver of Carroll Consulting’s next era. His pragmatic, process-driven approach complements Ian’s visionary style, ensuring every client receives a tailored, thoughtful service.
